Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Inclusion

Acknowledgement of Country

In the spirit of reconciliation, the ADA acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea, and community. We pay our respect to their elders, past and present, and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today.

Ahpra's 2021 Cultural Competency Compliance requires healthcare practitioners to provide culturally safe care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through education, ongoing development, and adherence to national standards, promoting inclusivity and addressing systemic health inequities.

ADA South Australia Branch is the only Branch in Australia to have an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Inclusion Committee, with the following objectives.

  • The promotion of professional and vocational pathways for Indigenous students in the oral health industry
  • Networking and collaboration across practical resources for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander oral health practitioners and students to access
  • Research and development of cultural competency education modules for the Membership and their Teams.
  • The collation and promotion of resources which enable Members to provide a culturally safe environment for care provision to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Cultural Competency Training

The ADA recommends the Centre for Cultural Competence Australia’s course in in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Competence as a first step in a training pathway and a pre-cursor to face-to-face, local and role specific cultural training. The course is designed to develop capabilities and build cultural competence whatever your level of knowledge in Aboriginal cultural education

Working with the Stolen Generations Dental Factsheet

This factsheet considers some of the challenges that may face dental staff when dealing with Stolen Generations survivors, the key points Stolen Generations survivors want dental practitioners to know, and lots of tips.

As with any population group, there is enormous diversity among Stolen Generations survivors, and this factsheet should be viewed as a starting point only.
